From Humble Beginnings….
A quiet barbeque, a few cold beers, some good mates, and some conversation. Out of such small beginnings some great ideas are born.
In this case the conversation was about a fresh new idea in tournament fishing that could include the whole family. The quarry was not just the bass that they would be fishing for, but people who might never take the opportunity to fish a tournament due to lack of experience, the expense, or simply not being exposed to tournament fishing. Oh, and Mum of course.
But how do you take the high competitive world of tournament bass fishing and make it Family, kid, and Mum-friendly?
First , you secure some industry leading sponsors such as Yamaha, Makocraft, Platypus, EvaKool, Bassman, Megabass, Pure Fishing, Humminbird and Minn kota …
Second , you make the event family friendly. This means increasing the safety standards to account for all the micro-fishos out there on the water. Including trolling for when young arms get tired, or patience wears thin.
Third , Ensuring a reasonable length break through the middle of the day so the kids have time to make their own lunch….
Fourth , you build the series around a culture of helpfulness, sharing, ethical fishing and respect for the environment and good old-fashioned fun. This means a catch and release only competition. It also means having presentations at every round where fishing techniques and tips are discussed, and those new to the sport have an opportunity to learn from the veterans.
It also means that the huge prize pool does not just go to the top anglers, but is spread out amongst all anglers. The sponsors get a chance to interact with new entrants into the sport, and everyone has a chance of a great prize. Introduced in 2008 is the Random Prize Draw where competitors can win a prize and then draw the next lucky prize winner and so on.
Fifth , you pick 2 top venues that are known big bass & Barra haunts and close enough to SE Queensland’s major population centers. Somerset for Bass and Lake Awoonga for Barra. And choose dates that don’t clash with any other tournaments:
Sixth , you gather a group of dedicated anglers who all bring a little something different to the team. Tournament experience, public relations skills, fishing expertise, organizational prowess, gear and tackle expertise, industry connections, and most of all a love for the sport.
Finally , you choose a name and a slogan for this new beast:
The BASSIN QLD SERIES.
Live it…Learn it…Love it!!!
Get in on the Ground Floor
Talk to any fisherman and they will tell you about family traditions which they had as a kid (or as big kids). Whether it was “We fish the Straddie Classic every year”, or the Cabarita Greenback comp, or the Stessl, or the Golden Lure…
Great family fishing events breed great family traditions and memories. Those that are able to say, “We have fished every one since the beginning” always have the extra bit of smugness in their voice.
The BASSIN QLD SERIES competition has grown to what it is today since the beginning in February 2006. With thanks to our many kind and generous Sponsors and of course to you our great competitors......
